Some weddings you photograph as a professional. And then there are the ones that take your breath away — not just because of the scenery, or the flowers, or the light — but because of who is standing in front of your camera.
This is one of those weddings.
I have known Katherine since before she was born. Her family moved in across the street from me while her mom Jackie was still pregnant, and from the moment Kat arrived, she was part of the fabric of our neighborhood. When she was around two years old, I spotted her outside with her dad in his breathtaking garden — he was a landscape architect with an extraordinary eye for beauty — and I grabbed my camera and ran out to photograph her. I wasn’t even in business yet. I was just a woman with a lifelong love of photography and a little girl who was absolutely magical in front of the lens.
That was twenty-six years ago.
As Kat grew up, she became my favorite little model. We would head out to fields together, dress her up, and spend the happiest, most joyful afternoons capturing images I will treasure forever. I never once imagined that someday I would have a photography business — and that the little girl from across the street would ask me to photograph her wedding day.
When Katherine called me, I cried. And on October 26th, 2026, standing on a hilltop at The Garrison in Garrison, New York, surrounded by the most spectacular fall foliage I have ever seen — I cried again. Happy tears, every single one. October 24th, 2026 is a day I will never forget.
How Katherine Met Ryan
After college, Kat followed her heart into nursing — a calling that surprises no one who knows her. As Ryan himself will tell you, she is the kindest, most selfless person he has ever met. Of course she became a nurse.
One night, Kat and some friends headed out to a local bar in Morristown, New Jersey — the kind of spontaneous evening that changes everything. That is where she met Ryan. By all accounts, Ryan knew that night. He just knew. They dated, they grew together, they built a life — and when the time came, Ryan did things the right way. He asked Jackie for permission to marry her daughter.
Everyone who loves Katherine and Ryan could not have been more thrilled.
Why The Garrison
Katherine and Ryan share a deep love of the fall season — the colors, the crispness in the air, the particular magic that settles over the Hudson Valley when October arrives. When they found The Garrison, tucked into the hillside of Garrison, New York with the mountains rising all around it, they knew immediately. This was the place.
And they were right.
The Garrison is one of those venues that does not need much. The land itself is the décor — rolling hills, ancient trees blazing in amber and crimson, mountain views that stretch as far as the eye can see. As a photographer, I was in absolute heaven from the moment we arrived.
Getting Ready & The First Look
The morning unfolded with the warmth and excitement you feel when a bride has been loved her whole life by the people surrounding her. Kat’s warm green bridesmaids filled the getting-ready space with laughter and happy tears, and when she was ready — truly ready — we set the first look at the top of one of the hills, with the mountains wrapping around them on every side.
I will never forget watching Ryan turn around.
The fall foliage framed them like a painting. The mountains held them. And the two of them stood there in their own world, completely oblivious to everything else. It is exactly what a first look is supposed to be.
The Wedding Party
Katherine and Ryan chose a large wedding party because they could not imagine leaving any of their closest friends out — and honestly, it showed in the most beautiful way. The warmth and joy radiating from that group was contagious.
The bridesmaids wore a rich warm green that looked absolutely stunning against the fall landscape, and the groomsmen were sharp in charcoal grey suits. Together, the palette — deep greens, burnt oranges, blush pinks — felt perfectly chosen for the season and the setting.
Florist Greyson Gerdts brought that vision to life in the most extraordinary way. The florals were lush, romantic, and rich with the colors of autumn — exactly what Katherine and Ryan had dreamed of.
The Ceremony
The ceremony was held outdoors, the Hudson Valley mountains serving as the most breathtaking backdrop imaginable. As Katherine walked down the aisle, the fall colors surrounded her, and the whole scene had a tenderness to it that was almost impossible to put into words.
When they read their vows, there was not a dry eye in sight — mine included. The love between these two is so genuine, so rooted, so full of quiet strength, that it simply fills a space. Their words to each other were beautiful. The moment was one I will carry with me for a very long time.
Portraits at Sunset
After the ceremony, we snuck away — just the two of them and me — out to the mountain as the sun began its descent. The sky caught fire. Gold and rose and the deepest, most impossible blue began to spread across the horizon, and Katherine and Ryan stood together in the glow of it, laughing, holding each other, completely in love.
Those portraits are among the most beautiful I have ever made in my career.
And then — because Katherine is Katherine — she changed into the most adorable little white fringed dress for the reception. When she spun around for me on the dance floor, that fringe flying, her face lit up with pure joy? I could have photographed her all night.
The Reception
The reception at The Garrison was nothing short of magical. Warm twinkle lights glowed overhead, creating an intimate, romantic atmosphere that felt like something out of a dream. The tables were dressed in the rich greens, oranges, and pinks of Greyson Gerdts’ stunning floral arrangements, and the in-house cuisine had guests raving all night long.
The entertainment was something special — a DJ complemented by live guitar, drums, and saxophone that filled the room with incredible energy. The dance floor was packed from the very first song, and the night was filled with the kind of unbridled joy that only happens when a room is full of people who truly love the couple at the center of it.
The moment that stopped time — the moment that will stay with everyone who was in that room — was Katherine’s first dance with her mom, Jackie. Halfway through the song, her brother Jeff quietly stepped in to join them. Three of them, turning slowly together, a family held together by love and loss and incredible strength.
There was not a dry eye in the entire room. Including mine.
