Kayla and Matt’s love story began long before they officially started dating. The two grew up just two miles apart in Long Valley, New Jersey, knowing of each other since second grade. But it wasn’t until junior year of high school Physics class that Matt developed a serious crush on Kayla. One day, he finally built up the courage to start talking to her and ask her out.
Kayla—always focused on school and sports—wasn’t easily distracted by anything outside of her busy schedule, but Matt stayed persistent. Eventually, she said yes, and they officially became a couple in June 2015.
From High School Sweethearts to Long-Distance Love
After high school, life took Kayla and Matt in different directions. They dated on and off through college and early adulthood, always finding themselves drawn back together. In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, their connection rekindled for good. This time, it was Kayla’s turn to pursue Matt—staying just as persistent as he once was.
At the time, Matt had moved back home to New Jersey while Kayla lived in Philadelphia. Later, Matt relocated to Charlotte, and they spent several years in a long-distance relationship before officially uniting in Charlotte in 2023.
The Proposal in Charlotte, NC
Matt’s proposal was the perfect mix of spontaneous and romantic. While he’s typically a thoughtful planner, this time he decided to wing it. The weekend before, he asked Kayla’s parents for their blessing and, ring in hand, decided on a Friday night that he would propose the very next day.
On Saturday morning, Kayla came home from a workout when Matt suggested a coffee walk and breakfast. Kayla—too hungry to shower—went in her workout clothes. After breakfast, they strolled through a nearby park when Matt spotted a charming wooden bridge in the forest.
There, he began talking about their future before getting down on one knee and asking Kayla to marry him. The two spent the weekend celebrating quietly with their dog, Ruby, before sharing the news with friends and family. Later, they gathered in Long Beach Island (LBI) for a joyful celebration with loved ones.
Engagement Session by the Beach
For their beach engagement photos, Kayla and Matt wanted something timeless, natural, and joyful. They’ll incorporate soft floral details and, of course, their beloved dog Ruby. The beach setting perfectly reflects their shared love for the ocean, travel, and laid-back adventures.
Life Together
When they’re not planning their June 2026 wedding—just 30 minutes from where their love story began—you can find Kayla and Matt enjoying life with Ruby, taking her for walks, heading to the lake or beach, or simply cuddling at home. They love hiking, discovering new restaurants, cheering for Notre Dame and the Buffalo Bills, and spending time in LBI. Matt is also an avid golfer, and he’s currently teaching Kayla so they can enjoy weekends on the golf course together.
Kayla & Matt’s Long Valley NJ engagement story is a beautiful reminder that some love stories truly come full circle. From high school classmates to long-distance partners, and now to soon-to-be husband and wife, their journey has been filled with persistence, laughter, and deep connection.
If you’re planning beach engagement photos in Long Beach Island (LBI) or want a romantic, natural setting for your portraits, I’d love to help you capture your own love story.
